It is a Shield bug, looks like one called 'Hawthorn shield bug but could well be a 'Birch catkin shield bug which is very similar to the Hawthorn bug.

Excellent close up. It may be this Hawthorn Shield Bug.

Birch Shieldbug (Nephrotoma appendiculata) Jn11

The Birch Shield Bug (Elasmustethus interstinctus) looks like this.

Many thanks for that, John. These are somewhat difficult to distinguish. Very little difference between them

You are welcome.
The Hawthorn Shield bug is much larger than the Birch Shield bug, birch shield bugs are mostly Red while small but the pattern on the back is clear.

Your owm photo to me suggests it is the Hawthorn bug, it has bits like shoulder padding that the Birch bug does nt have.
