Indonesia Medan Kampong Keling 1980
Indonesia Sumatra, Kampong Keling market, Medan. Note the fine vegetables amongst the tropical fruit. These were grown in Brastagi a few hours drive and a few thousand feet higher to the southwest where the climate was more temperate.
We lived in Medan from 1979 to 1981 when I worked for Mobil & greatly enjoyable it was. I found the people and places fascinating. Every day threw up something new & even on the walk to the office you saw different things of interest.
I went back on holiday in 1997 &, unsurprisingly, things had changed. Toko Ben's - the sacks sit outside the shop entrance - had transformed into a modern supermarket no longer opening onto the market but what shocked me the most was the fact that the Mobil office building had been converted into a Pizza Hut! A sign of the times I suppose.

Merry Xmas and a healthy 2021 !!
Loose_Grip/Pete club has replied to Jaap van 't Veen clubI spent lots and lots of time in Sumatra from 1988 to 2000. I speak Indonesian. I spent much time in Brastagi where I worked to get a tourist café up and running with local friends, an also had families I used to stay with on Lake Toba, in Aceh, and in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. I love the people very, very much.
Have a fabulous Xmas....all the best to you and yours xx

Diana Australis club has replied to Loose_Grip/Pete clubSo interesting that you know where I spent so much happy time! I have spent quite a few Christmases in Brastagi with Batak friends, and even one where Eid ul Fitri was 2 days after, so I was dragged to every Christian house for a nosh up, then to all my Muslim friends fir the same 2 days later! They were good times! I have also spent weeks at a time in my “family” home (Muslim) in Bukittinggi, where I knew half the town, too.
Such coincidences! I was in Bukittinggi 3 years ago fora “family” wedding and it was still pretty much the same as 20 years ago!
Best wishes..,D
