Rugeley Power Station
As the end of coal powered generation draws nearer in Britain, Rugeley power station continues to produce intermittently for the time being.
Hem Heath Power Station
On the site of Hem Heath Colliery now stand this 40Mw power plant utilising coal mine methane. It is operated by Alcane Energy which has similar plant at sites such as Bevercotes, Warsop, and Whitwell.

Farewell Rugeley
Rugeley 'B' power station was still generating a few weeks ago but was finally switched off on June 9th.
Another one gone
Ferrybridge 'C' power station was closed earlier this year. Operated by Scottish and Southern Energy plc this 2000 megawatt power station first generated electricity in 1966.
Lingquan (Jalainur) power station
The sun sets behind the 600Mw Lingquan power station at Jalainur in the Mongolian Autonomous Region of China. It is operated by the China Huaneng Group which is the largest electricity producer in China with a market share of just less than 14%. The steam trains that served the nearby opencast mine and several deep mines have been replaced with diesels and the opencast mine is now closed.
Coal moving

Bucketwheel excavator and grader working the coal storage tip at Drax power station. Got to keep the coal moving to avoid spontaneous combustion.
Biomass inside
Biomass storage at Drax power station. Balloon on the outside, concrete on the inside, with a layer of foam sandwiched between. Simple but effective. If water got in they would have thousands of tons of soggy weetabix to dispose of!
Ash hopper

Base of the ash hopper underneath one of the boilers at Drax power station. If all else fails they stick a big bar through those yellow doors in order to remove encrustations.
Farewell to the gasholder
With the remaining gasholders in Britain being redundant it is just a matter of time before they are all demolished. This is the MAN type gasholder on Jackson Street, St Helens which was built in 1972 and was the largest of its kind in the UK. Standing 85m tall, it had the capacity to store 3m cubic feet of gas. It was demolished in 2012.
A job with a view

Working on a cooling tower at Drax power station. It's a very long climb up that ladder.
Carrickfergus
I don't often do selfies but this can be an exception. That's my shadow from the top of the surviving gasholder at Carrickfergus gasworks. Below you can see the remains of the two earlier holders that this replaced in 1949. The brick lined tank of one is on the left whilst only the circular outine of the base is visible for the other.
Spa Fields Gasworks

Gasholders at the Spa Fields gasworks site in Bolton. Sadly these have now been demolished.
Going soon
Macclesfield gasholders under demolition. The 1884 holder has had the tank removed and work is being done in the well before the stanchions are taken down some time in October. When completed this will allow access to the more modern holder behind which will be cut up by Christmas. There was once another gasholder on the site but this was removed in the 1970s.
Meadowhall gasholders
These two massive telescopic gasholders in Sheffield have sadly now been demolished.
Chelmsford gasholders
The gasworks site in Chelmsford is to be redeveloped for housing and car parking. These gasholders are redundant and will be scrapped.
Biomass power

Inside the generation hall at Drax power station. Most of the generation at the time was from biomass fuel.
The Carrickfergus gasholder
This gasholder was erected at Carrickfergus gasworks in 1949 and is the sole survivor of the three that were once on the site. It is now preserved as part of the gasworks museum.
