Hawks Wood limekiln 1

Hawks Wood limekiln 1
The highlight of this week's limekiln hunting trip was the Hawks Wood quarry adjacent to the Chesterfield Canal at Thorpe Salvin. Of the four eighteenth century flare kilns have survived on the site this one is unusual in having two draw tunnels serving a single bowl. These are an excellent survival of the type of intermittent kiln technology used in parts of South Yorkshire until at least the 1930s. The large bowl of the kiln is just in front of the figure at the top left. None of this will be visible in a few weeks due to vegetation growth.
