Weird. I can understand if it was in the other direction - get searched when you get up - but getting searched before you go below ground sounds - ahm - useless? So I will copy Davids question - what did they expect to find?

This is a coal mine with explosive gases likely underground. You were not allowed to take underground anything that might cause a spark or flame such as matches or anything battery powered. Cigarettes are also banned as is any paper such as newspaper or books as it is inflammable.
