"The Venice of Drains"

"The Venice of Drains"
This is St Saviour's Dock on the River Thames in London.

Charles Dickens once described it as one of the "filthiest and strangest localities hidden in London" and his newspaper called it "The Venice of Drains'. It is now one of the most desirable areas of London in which to have an apartment.

Times change!

Haven't seen this part of London, but you've persuaded me me to go next time we're there! The treatment is spot on, David, and makes the photo look very old.

Thanks for the offer, Dave. We have a daughter in Belfast, so we do get over there from time to time - usually fly into Heathrow. When we come again I would like the location of St. Saviour's since we don't do the usual tourist things.

a lovely presentation Dave indeed ... and I remember seeing
one of Dickens books shown on tv in a series and it should the
river looking murky and misty and almost smelly but indeed it
had a charm ... I guess this is what it has going for it ... old
charm ... bit like you I guess ;-) hehehe ... have a good weekend

*

and Dickens walked the streets we know
and down by the River he did go . . .
swirling mists and smell no doubt
lingered and hung around on his coat
phew he smelt when he got home
but always he went to seek and to roam
to get ideas and to write them down
we still enjoy his stories today
and now it's so popular to live here you say
I wonder what Dickens would make of it now
is it still smelly ... I wonder, somehow . . .
