In front of Santa Maria Maggiore, this column was the sole survivor of the eight marble columns which graced the Basilica of Maxentius in the Forum, completed by Constantine.
It was set up on its base by the architect Carlo Maderno, nephew of Domenico Fontana: the fluted column was brought to the Esquilino hill and once erected was crowned with a statue of the Virgin.
