Italian tradition: when a child looses a tooth, he put it under a glass or a cup..... and overnight a mouse will bring him some money:)

Here the child puts the tooth under the pillow for the Tooth Fairy to collect overnight and leave a coin in exchange. Nowadays though, they expect more than the silver sixpence mentioned by Fragglerocks in his comment (above).
