Dredgelands near Sumpter, Oregon

Cobble-sized spoil left behind from dredging operations for gold. This had been farmland, and the farmers had sold their mineral rights--without, however, any constraints on how the minerals might be recovered.
I don't think it was a good trade--
Hole in the Wall Lake

Formed just off Oregon state route 86 by a landslide that dammed the Powder River in the fall of 1984. The slide was triggered by a combination of heavy rains and weak, incompetent rock (Jacobson et al., Oregon Geology, May 1985). At this time the highway had been rebuilt to bypass the new lake, and AFAIK the new alignment is still there.
