Little Needle Lake

Little Needle Lake
With Little Needle Peak skylined beyond. A small cirque lake in the Sierra Nevada a mile or so off the Pacific Crest Trail west of the Squaw Valley Ski Resort. We almost didn't find the lake because the use path to it wasn't _nearly_ as well-defined as the guidebook said! I was glad I'd brought the Kindle with the topo map. The left inset is a telephoto view of the large glacial erratic improbably perched on the ridge to the left of the peak. The right inset is a view across the lake behind me. There was more evidence of bear activity around the lake than we've seen anywhere else in the Sierra--I would not want to camp overnight here!

RHH, Smiley Derleth, Gudrun and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

A fine shot. The bears appreciate fine scenery as well! (and also the water source perhaps!)

I imagine the water is a large part of it! Water sources are dwindling this late in the season--all the little creeks have dried up. The area is also remote from human habitation--it's in the middle of the Granite Chief wilderness--so that's probably a factor as well.

The landscape looks fascinating but I'd have been scared of the bears, even during the day;-)

We were careful to make lots of noise, so as not to startle any that might have been sleeping in the brush, and we kept the dogs on lead except when they were in the water. Nearly always the bears will skedaddle if you give them a chance. Don't catch them unawares!
