The Moon and Pyramid Lake

The Moon and Pyramid Lake
Landlocked Pyramid Lake is the sump for the Truckee River, so that its level is set by a balance between inflow and evaporation. The levels have dropped substantially since the arrival of Euro-Americans because of upstream diversions; indeed, an overflow basin in the next valley, Winnemucca Lake, dried up completely in the 1930s. Pyramid Lake is contained wholly within the eponymous Paiute reservation, and you need to get a permit from the tribe for all outdoor activities on the Rez. Nevada, USA.

Beautiful evening shot. Without commenting on the history behind it all the reservations have in many cases preserved some beautiful areas.

Thanks! And that they have. As I commented elsewhere, the problem wasn't so much the "reservations" per se as the fact that the government's promises in setting them up were largely not kept. Since the late 20th century the courts have been taking those promises much more seriously; cf. the Boldt decision there in the PNW and the emergence of reservation casinos. Apparently the reservations retain some residual sovereignty, and the courts are still deciding just how much.

That gave me alot to go look up... fascinating ! Specially about the Petroglyphs.

The casino's have been saviours. They employ.. they give good wages and medical insurance to even the part timers and best of all... they give money into the NA Nations for kids to go to school and Uni... and for outreach projects and start ups.

The irony is not lost in where the money going in mostly comes from. When folk whine about ill spent money in there.. I remind them no-one forces people to go into them.

Yes.. the Courts are having to sit and take notice now... sad its taken so long

Well, I think of gambling as a tax on the mathematically challenged ;) Having grown up in Nevada, and lived most of my life here, my gambling is limited to putting 2 bits in a video poker machine once in a while. The best way to deglamorize gambling is to grow up with it. It's not a forbidden fruit that way.

But it's nice that the Native Americans are able to use it!

Quite agree there is nothing glamous about gambling.. but as I said.. no-one forces anyone to do so.. or smoke.. or drink or any other thing.

What I do like is that its being put to excellent use.....

Being brought up to be responsible is the key.. but there is a great deal of common sense and education involved in that.. and sadly many so called "parents" have zero responsibility.

Oh, I quite agree--I'm not a believer in saving people from themselves. If they want to gamble, it's their choice. I just find it amusing! ;)

Thanks, everyone! It's an area worth spending time in--altho, alas, the tribe has had to close some areas due to vandalism.
