The sign's been there so long that the bark growing under it has almost bent it in half! The tree is a western red cedar. Just off the Pacific Crest Trail where it crosses the North Fork of the Yuba River on a footbridge. In fact, the sign says "North Fork Yuba." Northern Sierra Nevada, California, USA.

Thanks, everyone! I thought it was interesting that the wood in the sign just bent rather than fracturing, presumably because the slow-growing bark applied the force so gently but steadily. You can't just take a piece of wood and bend it like this in your workshop!
