Bear box

"Be Bear Aware"! You find these big steel boxes in campgrounds in bear country. This is by Emerald Bay off Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada, California. You put, not just your food, but anything with a strong odor in the box (perfumes, deodorants, etc.--even soap and detergents!) The idea is that the box latch requires an opposable thumb, so the bears can't open it!

Thanks, everyone! Yeah, the whole idea is to keep the bears wild and not habituate them to living off humans. That's when they get dangerous. And, if you come back and your car/tent/trailer has been trashed by a bear, it's _your_ fault and you can get a fine!
