Split Glacial Erratic

Split Glacial Erratic
Been lying there since the glaciers retreated at the end of the Pleistocene, ca. 10K years ago, and is slowly breaking up in place. It's a piece of granite with iron-rich (mafic) inclusions, which are the dark spots weathering out. There are lots of erratics lying around all over this area.

Always thought-provoking these enormous rocks cracked open. Great capture.

Thanks! I put an explanation in the caption. You should have lots of glacial erratics in Scotland, too!

I've seen a few, without knowing what they're called. Very photogenic. These things which have been subjected to violent destructive forces are left with a feeling of peace, serenity and contemplation. Cheers.

Yeah, and once you get your eyeballs calibrated (as a prof of mine used to say) glacial features leap out at you everywhere.
