Mt. St. Helens

Mt. St. Helens
In June 1985, just over 5 years after the major eruption of May, 1980. Steam is rising from the crater from the new lava dome that has been building, off and on, since the eruption. At this time this was as close as the general public could approach.

Gudrun, William Sutherland, , have particularly liked this photo

Yeah, this would have been a grandstand view--a bit too much so, in fact!

My friend was 130 miles away and they were rocked by the eruption...

What is amazing now.. is the healing tha Nature has managed to do thus far.

Stunning.

It's really not so remarkable--eruptions at this scale happen "all the time" in the Cascades, geologically speaking, but there's little overt sign of them in the vegetative cover. I was a bit amused at the time the degree to which some people, particularly in the popular media, thought the eruption was somehow unprecedented. (And even sillier, that We Were Somehow to Blame...)

This shows the devastation very well and how big that crater is! Really impressive.

Thanks! St. Helens is worth a visit if you're ever in the area. Our weather was exceptionally good this time, is all.
