Cedar Breaks

Cedar Breaks
National Monument, Utah, USA. As I've noted elsewhere, the Breaks are eroded into the same orange-and-white weathering Wasatch Formation as is Bryce Canyon, so the resemblance is not accidental! A "breaks" was a scarp or ridge--that is, a "break" in the land surface.

Impressive scene and great colours. I guess the same derivation, in places over here we have 'breakaway country'.

The usage is pretty much archaic except in place names, as here.

Thanks, everyone! This area isn't a "destination" the way Bryce is, but it gets a lot of usage even so because it's next door to Brian Head, which is the nearest ski resort of any size to Las Vegas. With the rise of Vegas as a metropolitan center in its own right, southern Utah has felt the effects!
