Marie Rôze, born Marie Hippolyte Ponsin (1846-1926); French soprano.
She studied singing at the Conservatoire National de Paris with Mocker and Auber. In 1865 she made her debut at the Opéra-Comique in Herold’s opera “Marie”.
In 1868 she created the role of Djelma in Auber’s “Le premier jour de bonheur” and in 1870 the role of Jeanne in Von Flotow’s “L’ombre”. For a long period she worked with the Carl Rosa Opera Company and toured the United Kingdom and the United States of America. In 1890 she set up a music school and taught singing in Paris. She made her farewell tour in 1894. Her first marriage was with the opera singer Julius (Julio) Perkins (1845-1875) and her second marriage with opera impresario James Henry Mapleson.

Antoinette Sterling (1850-1904); American contralto.
After having started her vocal studies in New York with Abella she continued them in Europe with Mathilde Marchesi, Pauline Viardot-Garcia and Manuel Garcia Jr. After she returned to the USA in 1871 she began a very successful American career as a concert singer. In 1873 she went to England and sang in concerts with conductor/composer Julius Benedict and in 1875 she appeared at the Gloucester Festival. In 1875 she married John MacKinlay and they settled in London. Here she acquired much respect as an “Oratorio and Lieder” singer (Mendelssohn, Schumann etc). Her farewell tour was in 1902/03 and her last appearance was at East Ham on 15 October 1903.

Clara Louise Kellogg (1842-1916); American soprano.
In 1861 she made her debut as Gilda in Verdi’s “Rigoletto” at the Academy of Music in New York. In 1863 she performed the rôle of Marguerite in the New York première of Gounod’s “Faust”. In 1863 she also made a guest appearance at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London and proved successful in La Traviata, Linda di Chamounix, Don Giovanni and Martha. In 1868-1872 she made extensive tours in the USA. In 1872 she founded together with the soprano Pauline Lucca, the Kellogg-Lucca Opera Company which had a short-lived existence. In 1873-1876 she was the director of the English Opera Company that made extenive guest tours in the USA. Sometimes they made over a 125 performances per season. In 1877 she toured with Carl Rosa’s opera company “Tre Grazie”. In 1880 she made a guest appearance in Vienna and in 1881 in St. Petersburg. In 1887 she retired from the stage. She was married to her manager Carl Strakosch. In 1913 she published her life story in “Memoirs of an American Prima Donna”.

Marie Caroline Miolan-Carvalho, born Marie Caroline Félix-Miolan (1827-1895); French soprano who sang in various premières. The best known are in opera's by Charles Gounod: Marguerite in "Faust" (1859), Baucis in "Philemon et Baucis" (1860) , Sylvie in "La colombe" (1860), the title-role in "Mireille" (1864) and Juliette in "Roméo et Juliette"(1867). She studied singing at the Conservatoire National de Paris where she was a pupil of the famous tenor Gilbert Duprez. In 1849 she made her debut at the Opéra in Brest as Isabella in Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable". In that same year she was engaged in Paris at the Opéra-Comique where she debuted very successfully in the title role of "Lucia di Lammermoor". Here she remained until 1855. In 1853, she married Léon Carvalho, a French impresario and director of the Théâtre-Lyrique. After their marriage, she began to use the name Caroline Carvalho instead of Marie Miolan and became the prima donna at the Théâtre-Lyrique from 1856 to 1867. From 1868 until her retirement from the stage in 1885 she performed at the Opéra-Comique and at the Grand Opéra Paris. She made international guest appearances at London, Berlin, Brussels and St. Petersburg.
