Gustav Walter by Luckhardt (2)

Gustav Walter (1834-1910); Bohemian tenor.
In 1855 he made his debut at Brno as Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor”. In 1856 he was engaged by the “Wiener Hofoper” where he was “first tenor” for a period of over 30 years. In 1875 he created the rôle of Assad in Goldmark’s “Die Königin von Saba”. He sang many Viennese premieres like Manrico in “Il Trovatore”, the Duke in “Rigoletto”, Riccardo in “Un Ballo in Maschera”, Vasco da Gama in “L’Africaine”, Walther von Stolzing in “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”, Wilhelm Meister in “Mignon” and Loge in “Das Rheingold”. In 1887 he gave his last performance at Vienna with the opera “Mignon”.
After his retirement from the stage he became a very successful concert singer (Liedersänger). There are 5 grammophone records of his voice from 1904 and 1906.
His son Raoul Walter (1865–1917) and his daughter Minna Walter (1863–1901) were also successful opera singers (as tenor and soprano).

On the photo he is seen as Romeo in Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette".
