A visit to The Hague

20 Sep 2008 131
I had to bring in my MacBook for service, because the optical drive wasn't working properly. On the way back to the station I took some pictures.

Memorial for an act of senseless violence

20 Sep 2008 139
Senseless violence is called senseless because there is no perceived profit for the perpetrator of the violence. Senseless violence has been quite popular in Holland in the last years. Other forms of violence – for instance because one is "bored" or offended by an opinion – have been popular too, but they have met with more comprehension and understanding. The bastard that shot Hertogs got a 15 year prison sentence, that means that he will be out in 2012.

My MacBook is repaired

LJS of the Hague did a good job at replacing my optical drive. I had to work on my very sloooow 2002 iMac for a week.

New tunnel in The Hague

1.6 km long, very nice. They are still putting the final touches to it, that is the reason only one lane is open at the moment.

Empty road revisited

09 Oct 2008 141
Years ago I took a picture of a road. I didn't remember which road it was. Thanks to Rienk Mebius this road is identified as the Prins Bernhardlaan (Prince Bernhard Lane) in Voorburg, the Netherlands.

Wedding

25 Oct 2008 112
On Saturday I attended a wedding of friends of mine. My old diesel Merc was used to drive them to and from the city hall. It was a rather busy affair and as I'm not really fond of crowds it put me into a pensive and somber mood. The wedding was held at the old City Hall of The Hague, which is a rather nice old building, dating from 1564 with major expansion from 1733. I was born in The Hague, but I never visited the old City Hall. I didn't take my Nikon and my SonyEricsson phonecam was out of service with a display problem (now solved), so you have to make do with these Nokia phonecam pictures.

Yi Jun Peace Museum in The Hague

26 Oct 2008 180
"Yi Jun was one of the most honoured figures in the Korean struggle for independence. He died on 14 July 1907 in The Hague, where he came together with two other Korean delegates to attend the Second Hague Peace Conference. At that time Korea was occupied by Japan and Japan managed to convince the other delegations not to allow Korea to take part in the conference. Yi Jun protested and was found murdered in his hotel on the Wagenstraat (in today’s Chinatown), where there is now a private Peace Museum in his honour."
