The Dutch postal service has stopped making stamp with a specific value and nowadays only stamps for a specific function, i.e. a stamp for a letter to a European country, domestic letter, are available. This easier when postal rates go up, but letters like these will become rare.
In case somebody is wondering why I write letters to "FRANCE" with no further address, I wiped out the address to protect the innocent.
The modern postal system was founded in the late 19th century and you can still put a letter in a postbox on one side of the world and have it delivered on the other side.
