When on February 8, 1897 the flagpole with the Greek flag is hit by a cannonball, Spiros Kayalis acts as a flagpole. The Italian admiral Kanevaro is impressed and he stops the bombing. Venizelos was a Greek politician and he was prime minister from 1910 to 1920 and from 1928 to 1933. He was born on Crete when it was still under Turkish occupation.
