Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel 2022 – Original cell
One cell was left in the condition of the Second World War. This was a cell for three people. Sitting on the bed during the day was not allowed.
The prison at Scheveningen was used by the Germans in the Second World War to house their prisoners. Around 25,000 people stayed here. It had the nickname Oranjehotel (Hotel Orange) because of the large number of people of the resistance who were imprisoned here, orange being the colour of the Netherlands.
Before the war the prison was used for prisoners on remand, but during the war people stayed longer and more people were kept in one cell.
