A Mandolin Dream

A Mandolin Dream
Saturday Self-Challenge: Music

Our family is quite musical; my husband can play Guitar, banjo and mandolin (pictured above); my daughter is a music teacher who can play piano, strings and flute (her primary instrument). My son is a guitar virtuoso and writes his own music. Music is on my side of the family, too, and I've attempted to learn violin and mandolin, but never had good enough fine motor dexterity to be any good. The mandolin is made by Martin, famous for its world class guitars.

Have a great weekend, friends, and an extra hug to you, Pam!

, Smiley Derleth, Gillian Everett, Berny and 42 other people have particularly liked this photo

I learned to play the piano when I was a little child...
but I never really liked it. It was much more interesting for me
to be able to express music with my body.

Have a nice Saturday.

We have a lot in common Valerie. I play all fretted instruments, mouth Harmonica, drums and piano (Keyboards) the later only used when composing. My music is Folk, mostly traditional Music is a hobby not a way of lifehere. My mother played piano and sang bits from operas, my dads brother had his own band, my mothers father wasa military later pro entertainer with minstrel type stuf, my dadcould only play yhe fool.
Strangely only the boys in the family are musically gifted.

MARVELOUS!!! I love the angle here, it's just super, and the focus that drops off into that super fence bokeh is just great!

I loved reading about your musical family! How wonderful to be surrounded by so much melody in your world. I myself used to play the flute as a kid but stopped just as I was finding my groove... I decided I didn't really like the sound a flute makes and I didn't like people hearing me practice. But some day maybe I'll sit down and learn to play the piano or keyboard...I do love the sound and music from them!

My oldest brother began to play guitar when he was about 12. He loved heavy metal/rock, and eventually learned to play as a virtuoso. There is nothing he cannot play. When I heard him play a classical piece, a flamenco piece, a melodic rock piece, one after the other...wow...just...wow. He's totally amazing. Played in bands through the years, toured Europe and Japan, etc, never a "big name" but could easily play with anyone. Doug is, like my parents (and well, all 4 of us kids, thank you mom and dad!!), a genius and when he points his brilliance at his music, one must sit and just gape as he plays. :) Funny, I could give you a link to some of his band URLS but it's all heavy metal (crap) and I can't stand it...maybe I'll be able to link a "pretty" piece at some point. :)

In any event, NICE JOB WITH THE CHALLENGE!

Wonderful picture here Val. My grandmother was a concert pianist and I have her piano in my bedroom (it was the lounge before I made it my bedroom). My mum passed several exams for piano and she tried so hard to get me interested in it, it worked for a while, but I wasn't as good as she was, certainly not anywhere near as good as my grandmother, so I stopped practicing. I'm afraid the talent stopped when I was born.

A lovely contrast between the finished wood of the mandolin and the rougher wood of the background.

Not a flattering angle for that mandolin. I mean, look at those hips.

I'm amazed at how many instruments you play in your family! I only ever learned the recorder and the piano. As I never was that brilliant- no winning the Chopin competition at 18;-) - I'm glad I changed to a boring but paying job in time...
