Mandolin Rain

The story behind this image: A couple of days ago, I heard one of my favorite Bruce Hornsby songs on the radio; I immediately got an idea use the song as my muse for this week's image, using white balance to accent the mood I wanted. I have a mandolin that I used to play (not so well) many years ago at family functions, made by CF Martin & Company. They are world renown for their guitars, but they also make very nice mandolins. My particular instrument is the "A" style model, not the typical "scroll" style that you see more commonly in bluegrass bands.

I must say that I really like the idea of using white balance to achieve a particular atmosphere!

Stunning stunning stunning! Val, I had the same problems as you but additionally I could see no difference with the shots. I have sorted but not quite mastered. This is truly spectacular! I love the image you ended up with. What a triumph !

Wow, Jan, thanks so much! Lots of trial and error on my part, that's for sure! That being said, I can say with sincerity that this week's challenge made me aware of another "tool" I can use to create an entirely different look to an image. :-)

Mandolins are so pretty. I don't think I've ever seen this type before.

You have two very beautiful mandolins! The one on the top half of your photo looks like an "A" style, like mine, the one below it looks like the classic Eurpoean style. Do you play them sometimes?

no, sadly I do not play ... but there is a story and briefly ;-)
my Father was in the Royal Navy during the war ... the day he was due
to set sail ... him and his friend went to board the ship ... he had spent
the weekend with his friend and family and his friend "Peter" played
the mandolin ... he had two (the two you see here) .. Peter played the
very old one and he had taught my Father how to play .... they were
about to set sail ... my Father was called back to leave the ship ...
Peter stayed and sailed away ... the ship was hit by a torpedo,
the ship sank .... my Father visited the family to break the news
to them ... they gave him both mandolins to keep ... he played often
(with a tear in his eye) ... they now belong to me . . . ;-)
