Roof or Floor Tile

Roof or Floor Tile
Tile of the Ninth Hispanic Legion.
The Ninth operated from the first century BC until its mysterious disappearance in the mid 2nd century AD. Its disappearance has raised speculations over its fate, that it was destroyed in Scotland in about 117AD, that it was destroyed in the Roman-Parthian Wars or during the Bar Kokhba Revolt of 132–136AD. There is no evidence of what happened to this famous Legion, it simply drops out of the records. The last concrete information of its whereabouts is in 107-108AD when it is stationed at York (Eboracum) helping to rebuild the legionary fortress. This tile is proof it was in York.

In the Yorkshire Museum, York.
