USGS Seismic Station

USGS Seismic Station
A tech from the US Geological Survey came to install this seismic station in my garage today--we volunteered to host this little blue box as part of a larger network of small stations that should be able to give them finer data about earthquakes.

Yes, I need to clean my garage corners better. And the walls aren't looking too nice, either.

Sure, all of Southern California is; but people anywhere can volunteer to host a seismic station. When your location coincides with their specific study interests, they'll call to set up an installation. Here's the map of all the stations so far:

It has a little QR code so I can see what it's sending home to Pasadena on my phone--or I can check online--but it doesn't mean much to me. I'm kinda looking forward to the next 3.5-ish quake, just to see what it does then. ;)

We had a little 2.8 last night, but it didn't light up or play a tune or anything. Should I suggest that to the USGS? ;)
