The contrast between the 800 metre corridor along the Thames north and south of the river is astonishing
North of the river in Victorian times was posh and land was expensive, so the railways had to go underground
South of the river was proletarian and land was cheap. It was cheaper to build railways overground
So south London is criss-crossed by railways. It is almost impossible to walk these streets without falling over a railway bridge
It drives one to distraction sometimes becasue it narrows the view from street level
But because this was marginal land, the developers left alone that which the Luftwaffe missed.
And so if you look down rather than up you come across these forgotten Victorian relics and see London unchanged from the era prior to 4 August 1914.
And lots of lovely, contrasty, London stock bricks

these type of bricks are also around here - a certain brick that, when done good and didn't get wet during production - is still strong after 100 years and more. I have seen both - either the drill brakes when you try to set a screw anchor or you can push a hole into them with your little finger.
