1983 Ciöcc Mockba 80
serial no. 2510
Purchased in March 2007 as a frameset from CR List member Mark Buswell of San Francisco. Back on the road 16 May.
Fitted out pretty much to Ten-Speed Drive catalogue spec but with 172.5 cranks and 32-hole hubs and featuring the now hard to find original Ciocc pantographed stem, seat pin, shifters, brake calipers and levers and large chainring.
Some history
Ciöcc (pronounced “cheeoach”) was founded by builder Giovanni Pelizzoli, a former apprentice of Ugo DeRosa. Ciocc (local Val d’Aosta, Italian dialect for "poker faced" hence the Ciöcc badge of four aces in a cross formation) was his nickname as a pro rider. The Ciocc factory in Mozzo, northern Italy, is 10 miles from Colnago’s. The company built frames for the Polish National teams for years and this model celebrated the 1980 Moscow Olympic 2nd place win for Poland’s Czeslaw Lang in the Men’s Individual Road Race on a Ciöcc and bears the official Mockba 80 Olympics logo on the top tube. This is the first version of the model in Columbus SL with chromed rear triangle and fork and Campagnolo Super Record gruppo. Original price was c. $1600. When this bike was made, Ciöcc’s workshop employed just six men producing about 70-80 frames a month. Ciocc’s main US distributor was Ten Speed Drive Imports whose logo is imbossed on the rear brake bridge stay. They imported the frames from Italy unfinished and painted them in Dupont Imron to give a better and more durable finish than was common on Italian-made frames of the era. Still in business, Ciöcc is presently owned by the Bonati brothers, Stefano and Candido.
Ride/Handling
Stiff, responsive with an amazing pick-up, very sensitive handling, corners like on rails and…. very fast. This is a machine that likes to be pushed and ridden hard and perfect for those two-hour full-out thrashings any true racing bike is at its best on. I love the really close clearances between tires and tubes and the angles are uber tight and just right. Just brilliant. Add to this the '80s Italian bling of lashings of chrome, the wonderful Ciocc decals, the pantographed seat stay and fork caps as well as the special Ciocc pantographed components and you have an absolute classic Italian stallion of the era.
