vegetable garden beauty (PIP!)

vegetable garden beauty (PIP!)
Way too hot to go fence hunting this week, so these are from last summer.

In the main image: Cucumber flowers in the vegetable garden with fence repurposed as a trellis.
In the pip: Japanese lanterns, cultivated as ornamentals for their bright red fruit

HFF to those sweltering in the heat and those who are in the midst of winter on the other side of the world!

Thank you, Erich. I know what you mean: it's hard sometimes to keep yellow from getting "bleached out" by sun light.
Have a great week end!

How lovely, Annalia. In France we call the Japanse lanterns "Amour en cage" (= love in a cage)... I have no idea why. But it always amuses me to hear it. HFF and a nice weekend.

Annalia S. club has replied to Christa1004 club
Thank you, Christa. I think the French name might be inspired by the way the fruit looks when the papery outer protection becomes a filigree and you can see the bright red fruit inside, a bit like a heart in a cage, as in this pic www.agefotostock.com/age/en/Stock-Images/Rights-Managed/BWI-BLW040828

I hope you had a good crop a bit like courgettes they grow faster than you can eat them, In England we have to be different and call them Chinese Lanterns they used to be dried for winter decoration, I hope you have has a HFF Annalia and that your weekend is nice and cool !! here it's forecast to be 10c lower tomorrow
4 years ago.
Annalia S. club has replied to Peter Castell club
I think they have various names, Japanese/Chinese lanterns, ground cherries and others. These are from neighbouring gardens. In my garden, I have the other kind of Physalis, not so colorful but I really like them in salads and they are a very good vitamin source.
Today we are supposed to hit 40 °C but starting tomorrow they say temperatures should start easing a bit. Enjoy your cooler weekend and thanks for visiting!

We already have 30° in the upper floor. Thankfully, the ground floor always stays a bit cooler. I think I will head downstairs pretty soon now :)

Annalia S. club has replied to Marta Wojtkowska club
Thank you, Marta. I like the tail end of summer, when temperatures go back to being "livable", things are still ripening and there is just a hint of fall in the air ... But that won't be until late August/September here.

Thank you, Laura. A 90something neighbour man cares for this garden. I love listening to him talk about vegetable gardening. He came from a family of farmers, speaks almost exclusively the local dialect and probably didn't have much schooling, but when he speaks about plants he's fascinatingly knowledgeable and wise.

Yes in deed I like your cucumbers, warm and cheery on a cold January evening. The Japanese (Chinese) lanterns pretty but not so friendly. the roots of these got under our house once and I had two goes to remove it all.
3 years ago. Edited 3 years ago.
Annalia S. club has replied to HappySnapper
Thanks for the warning, HappySnapper. I did notice that they are pretty efficient at spreading if left to their own devices (they first came to my garden from a single fruit blown off a neighbour's balcony that landed on our property - I took some pictures then chucked it into the compost heap but the next year they showed up a bit everywhere!), but I did not think about roots getting into the house foundations.... I will make sure I keep them well away from the house!
