Beg, Borrow And Steal (Louie, Louie)
First recorded by the songwriter and The Pharaohs in 1957, the classic “Louie, Louie” (Richard Berry) was a number one hit for the Kingsmen (Joe Ely, Lynn Easton, Mike Mitchell, Don Gallucci and Bob Nordby) in 1963. Perhaps you could say “Richard was an influencer”.
One of the many successful studio groups created by producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jerry Katz was The Ohio Express. The first time they charted was with “Beg, Borrow And Steal” (J. Day – L. Zerato) with thanks to “Louie, Louie”. The single reached twenty-nine in 1967. The exact same recording had been released by a group called the Rare Breed the previous year.
