'Gibbet rock' .. Cressbrook dale .. Derbyshire.

'Gibbet rock' .. Cressbrook dale .. Derbyshire.
Along 'Cressbrook dale' we see ahead - the prominent 'Gibbet rock' ...so named because many years ago - criminals were placed and held captive in a 'Gibbet' a type of cage suspended from the rock. The poor captives were placed inside the cage either dead - or died later - and remained there..as a deterrent to all who pass by. On some mapping the rock is shown as 'Peters stone'.

Colin Ashcroft, Andy Rodker have particularly liked this photo

Good atmosphere (even if it does reflect the grisly story!)

Thanks Nicolas.. the top of the rock is accessible via a rugged path.. we have climbed and sat up there in the past. Good views !! but I don't suppose the prisoners were very interested !! :-)

Thank you 'Jaap' good walking too.. the green path is like walking on a lush soft carpet.. but the cloud came over making a dull grey day.
