Bassano del Grappa is a small town near Vicenza in Veneto , Italy.
One of its main attactions is this red wood bridge called Ponte Vecchio o Ponte degli Alpini
It´s the large wood bridge of Italy
Builded in XIII cetury over Brenta river was many times distroyed by floods, by humans and by fire and several times reconstructed
Andrea Palladio the most important architecht from Veneto in XVI century rebuilt the bridge giving it its present appearance. Although many historical events have happened, it is worth mentioning that in 1809 the Archduke John of Austria crossed the bridge pursued by Italian-French forces. Here are the traces of the bullets on the walls (see PIP).
On February 17, 1945 15 partisans commanded by commander Massaccio blew up the bridge with explosives as a war plan with the allies. In response the Nazis shot 3 members of the resistance.
It was rebuilt in 1947 according to Palladio's plans.
In 1966 it was partially destroyed by another flood and rebuilt again.
The landscape from the bridge with the calm river Brenta and its reflections is wonderful. (check PIPs)
