Norton-sub-Hamdon Church

Norton-sub-Hamdon Church
The Church of St Mary the Virgin has 13th-century origins but was rebuilt around 1510. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building. Restoration was undertaken in 1894 and again in 1904. The five-stage tower, dates from around 1485, and is 98.5 feet (30 m) high. It was damaged by lightning and fire on 29 July 1894, but restored within a year preserving the original design. The dovecote in the churchyard dates from the 17th century, and was associated with a manor house which was demolished around 1850.

A very well done set of photos! The tower is unusually high, the mellow stone looks beautiful in the sunlight. I like the idea of having a dovecote in the cemetery.

A lovely set of images, Rosa. I'm not familiar with dovecotes, so looked it up - then found myself wondering what it's doing in the grounds of the church.

It is unusual to see them in a church yard, but I just remembered another in North Cadbury. I think I put some pic's om Panoramio...but that was a long time ago now!

Thank you Gudrun. It is unusual but I just remarked to Amelia that I have remembered another and had put a picture on Panoramio once :)

It took me a while to find anything about this particular dovecote George, and it seems it may have been part of a medieval complex attached to The Priory, in nearby Stoke-sub-Hamdon.
Thank you for your kind comments. I hope your wife is recovering well. My best wishes for a good week ahead to you both.
