Cistus or Jara

Cistus or Jara
Sierra de La Cabrera. Rock rose. Spanish has cistus and also jara (jara, apparently means smelling of sh.t in arabic).
But I don't get it. Yes, there can be a heady, cloying, almost sickly air on some days but usually the aroma, mixed in with the lavender, rosemary and thyme is to die for!

Erhard Bernstein, Fred Fouarge, Jenny McIntyre, and 27 other people have particularly liked this photo

Lavender, rosemary and thyme all together, that must be heaven! I love the photo too.

Thank you, Eva. These days I don't go walking here so much (for a variety of reasons) but I try to get here at least once in mid May to early June!

It does not seem an easy terrain to walk on, but I am sure worth it.

There are many paths and you can choose the degree of ease or difficulty as you wish. But prior knowledge is useful and there aren't many guides to the area. I initially used one written in the early 90s by an ex-pat Englishwoman and I still use it. It's very good but is now sometimes out of date, paths get blocked off due to ownership of land disputes, whole areas become forested and the paths vanish, rockfalls obliterate some paths, etc etc!

Well I like your description of the lavender, rosemary and thyme scent far better than the jara referred to by the Spanish. lol Those mountains seem to go on forever Andy.

And at this point, a stone's throw away from Madrid!
It amazes me how close to a major capital city you can get this! The reason is that they all live in flats here, whereas in the UK we all live in houses with gardens which eat up all the countryside!

I only mentioned it because a) that is the meaning of the word and 2) I am completely baffled by it!
The scent is perfectly agreeable!
