The Pepper Pot
... or Huer's Lookout, Portreath, Cornwall.
The Huer had to look out for the coming of the pilchard shoal; when seen, the town would galvanise into frenetic but well-practiced action! The nightmare scenario was if it was missed because it passed by in the night! In which case somewhere else in Wales or Ireland benefited.

Steve,
Josiane,
Very many thanks!
Andy Rodker club has replied to Peter Castell clubUnfortunately, the pilchard shoals suddenly declined too (over-fishing? climate change? who knows?). Portreath then declined rapidly, as did much of Cornwall.
Apart from tourism, which is only selectively beneficial, Cornwall relies massively on EU help. And it voted overwhelmingly for Brexit.
Go figure!

oh,oh,oh
I've never known before... ;-((
and it is very interesting that the sardines (pilchards) there were so many swarms.
Andy Rodker club has replied to aNNa schramm clubAs to the pilchards: They suddenly declined around the turn of the last century; no one really knows why. They are still caught, but in tiny numbers compared to then. The Cornish tourist authority decided, in their wisdom, to re-brand them (about 20 years ago, or so) as 'Cornish sardines', probably thinking that 'pilchard' had connotations as a fish for the poor and that sardines had connotations of a Mediterranean beach barbecue, or something like that! A mistake in my opinion, but what do I know??

Unfortunately never been there even though I would have always loved to, above all when had the opportunity being in England so many times.. what's more, as a teen-ager I was so deeply attracted by the Breton Cycle or..Daphne due Maurier 's novels :-o) that I've been always thinking of it as a fairy land. And it is , in spite of all.
Thank you so much for your very interesting pieces of information about what I was so completely ignoranT!! This a start for me to deepen my historical, cultural and social awareness(not only being based on.. novels!!:-D) before taking my trip to Cornwall!! 'ìll go there!!
Fingers crossed !!
Sorry for my so long-winded comment.:-)

belle soirée !
Andy Rodker club has replied to Nora Caracci clubIt does irritate me because I think why are they so special that we have to view their shots twice as often as they view ours! It seems arrogant to me!
