McKittrick Canyon

McKittrick Canyon
We had intended to do several hikes in the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas including an overnight backpack to the top of Guadalupe Peak, but were forced by the weather to change our plans. The first day there we went north into New Mexico and visited Carlsbad Caverns. The second day we hiked the McKittrick Canyon trail to McKittrick Ridge and the Notch. This photo was taken on the first part of that hike. The weather was overcast and threatening rain on our way in but cleared by the time we reached the Notch and we had a very pleasant, even very warm hike back out.

The first part of the McKittrick Canyon hike follows an old road to the Pratt Cabin, a summer home built in the 1930's in the canyon by a Texas oilman and geologist, Wallace Pratt. At that time the canyon was privately owned but was later donated by the Pratt family to the National Park Service. The cabin is still standing and is used by the Park Service as a kind of museum and visitors' center. There is history of the cabin on the Park Service's website here: www.nps.gov/gumo/learn/historyculture/prattcabin.htm.

A trio of winners, Ron! The weather may have been bad but you did make the best of it, and we get to appreciate your efforts! Your main shot has a great angle and there's something about it that makes me feel a bit forlorn and melancholy...the light colored dirt looks kind of like snow at first glance...cold and foreboding...great details though. Nice picture and info about the Pratt cabin, your picture is awesome through the shapely trees! :) And the last image shows some very nice color changing going on, and is also a sad and lonely image to me with the misty weather. So moody! :)

I know you're off on one of your adventures and I hope all is well! Steve and I are doing fine too, how nice it is to take our time visiting each state park! We're at park #3 right now, L.L. Stubb Stewart and I am sure that you guys would love all the trails as much as we do! A lovely place that we're so happy to return to!

LOL the comment you left on my duckie picture was awesome! Thank you for the giggle! :) We have had a number of great opportunities to appreciate duckie "butts in the air like they just don't care!"...Paulina Lake gave me many fine views to laugh at, and at Detroit Lake, bunches of ducks and geese were always around, harvesting goodies from underwater...that is a sight that just doesn't get old!! Steve and I just laugh and laugh, fill in excellent comments and enjoy every second the silly birds are showing off their ever-so-fine underwear! :D *snicker*

Regarding your comments about Paulina Lake and East Lake...shucks, it's too bad their rates were too high--the prices do add up in a hurry, that's for sure. But at least you were able to make due. :) Obsidian Flow? We'd originally had plans to visit but our hike ended up taking longer than expected and we were delighted at the obsidian that we found along the trail so it didn't bum us out too much to miss out on the cliff. We plan to stay at LaPine again and when we do we'll be making a point to visit Obsidian Flow.

I just went to see your pictures of the Flow...holy toledo, what a sight! Incredible and as amazing as what we got to see, the Flow itself is just mind-blowing!!! Loved the pictures, nearly fried my computer from all the drool! :) :) We'll definitely go next time around! :)

Looking forward to your next post--not only to see what you've served up for us but also to make sure all is well in your world. <3
