Calliope Hummingbird
We saw our first Humming bird Thursday, a male Calliope Hummingbird, the smallest North American bird, only three inches in length (7.5 cm). Their return from Mexico is sure sign of spring, the males arriving first and the females shortly thereafter.
The other birds I've posted are also signs of spring. The Goldfinches are changing back to their bright yellow color from the the dull green they wear in winter, the Western Ospreys are on their nest, and many ducks are migrating through the area or nesting in the area.
The photo was taken last year since I haven't yet been able to get a photo of this year's returnees. It was taken near one of the feeders we put up. This year we put up our feeders just the week before the Hummingbirds showed up, which was good timing for them and for us.

Greetz, Christien.
Ospreys over your property, you lucky stinker! They do not venture far enough from the Rogue River to be seen here--it's about 3 miles away--but there are plenty of them there.
We are getting a few Lesser Goldfinches and House Finches now which is a treat but the American Goldfinches won't show up for another couple of weeks...we like to refer to them as Steve's birthday present from Mother Nature, as they arrive near the 28th and we adore them!
Those duckies are so beautiful!! We have only seen ducks other than Mallards in our pond perhaps a couple of times. None stay for long, happily, though one year a pair unfortunately laid and hatched a clutch of adorable ducklings...*sigh*...there is no island for them, nor any good place to escape the coyotes, foxes, bobcats and other predators who surely enjoyed the free meal that year...if ever I see ducks hanging around too long I make my presence known and they fly away. I will not have a repeat of that miserable show. :(
There is a large seasonal pond not far from us that has an island built into it and they have lots of Canada Geese and the various ducky species flying through will land and hang out for x days before moving on. I do love to see them, such a variety of species! The Canada Geese will raise clutches there but not the ducks. I do look forward to getting the chance to see ducks in nesting areas!
I'm so glad that you enjoyed my French photos! I agree with you though...there is so much to see on this side of the pond! :) We love it all though. Hopefully you guys will get to do some overseas travel again at some point. Naturally your view on photography mirrors my own--I prefer nature photography but when I get the chance to do street and people photography I relish the time as it's a chance of pace and great practice! :) (We're going to the Pear Blossom parade and street fair today, plus possibly a wander through historic [marketed disgustingly through the nose] Jacksonville and I'll have fun with candids as well as flower photography!)
Your proclamation of nervousness about your trip has me worried too...you guys be CAREFUL...and FLY if there's any chance of bad issues...Steve flipped his truck some years ago when he went to drive down to SF on the first big storm of the season. It was incredible that he didn't get killed...so if there's a worry, please do not chance it. An extra few hundred bucks is worth peace of mind, guys. *hugs*
So delighted that your spring has arrived in full force, isn't it all so glorious?! YAYYY!!! And yes, when we are immersed in all of this gorgeousness, it's hard to recognize that there are so many places still gripped in winter's grasp.
Yeah, ticks...they are an evil we must be careful about, you guys and us. I did roll around in the undergrowth again yesterday but happily didn't pick up any passengers! :) (The little *******s!!) Sorry about making you squirm with my story, it's too close to home not to squirm! :P
Oh, and the recipe I pasted for you to see was really more so you could see the ingredients but just in case, the link has the directions. It's sometimes very odd how keto recipes can be but we're used to it! :)
Ok I'm outy...thanks again for your latest wonderful letter! Hoping all goes well with your travel plans!
