Barron Gorge

Barron Gorge
The first day we were in Australia we arrived in Cairns about noon and after picking up a car and checking in at our youth hostel we did some exploring. We visited the lower end of Barron Gorge but didn't find much place to hike or much to see. Nor was there much water coming through the gorge, though we don't know whether it was just the dry season or whether the water was being diverted to run the power plant. In any case, this is the view up the gorge from the end of the road. Later we would visit the other end of the Barron Gorge while in the Atherton Tablelands and would find it much more scenic.

Don't think I've ever been to Barron Gorge to find the water level so shockingly low.... Nice capture, though =)

Great capture.

There is a significant drought underway in eastern Australia.

It was interesting, Don, that while we were in Queensland the weather was unusually wet and rainy for that time of the year, so much so that people were talking about it wherever we went.

The drought may be ending on account of the end of El Niño. The recent rains are probably linked to development of what will very likely become a La Niña event.

Looking good, Ron. I'd put the lack of water down to being in the "dry season".
