The old gas station

The old gas station
I remember them being called "the filling station" when I was a child. When was the transition? I don't remember it.

I remember "gas station" back in the day. There was probably some regional variation.

I am older than you are, so filling station was probably a 40s-50s thing. By the way, this was a Beacon station and still had its original sign until a couple of years ago, when I noticed it was gone, along with the art deco tower it was on - probably sold by the auto repair owner at the time. ;-(

It was 'filling station' in the 50's in my hometown (Jacksonville, Fl). I don't remember when the change, but for some reason I'm thinking it was around the time when there stopped being attendants and we filled our own tanks. Considering the OR (still?) won't let you fill your own tank, it might be different there.

It's now "optional" to fill your own IF you live in a rural area. I guess that's because there aren't enough people to pump the gas plus sell beer in the store.
