My father had that school of thought about dogs (and cats), but that was 60 years ago, I would hope it would have faded away by now -- but I'm not surprised.

It still exists and same applies to hunting dogs. Another of theirs is a yellow lab named Duck (also pictured here) who is terrified of gunshots and other loud bangs. Result: 1st owner had no use for him. They rescued him about 10 years ago and he's 13 now.

My grandfather was like that - cattle rancher. Pets were a ridiculous waste of time.

As one of my brothers pointed out many decades ago, that was actually how my father thought about his children too :) He (my father) ignored me since I couldn't remember the difference between a crescent wrench and channel pliers, which luckily left me with time to read...
