Logs ahead

Logs ahead
Rogue River, Oregon. These are tiny matchsticks compared with the monsters my dad used to log! The above would likely be from a tree farm, not a "real forest" as we used to know them. These logs are probably going to a mill that produces wood products like plywood or window frames, not construction lumber.

Don Barrett (aka DBs travels), Nora Caracci, Berny, Andy Rodker and 10 other people have particularly liked this photo

Nicely seen and taken. If I were driving behind that load, I'd be at least 2 log lengths away..!!

They are tied down by regulation chains tightened with binders, so not much danger. Driving behind an amateur tie-down job (and I have) would really worry me. Thank you, Keith!

I agree with Keith. I think this would be pulled over immediately if spotted by the police, certainly in most of Europe . It doesn't look in any way secure!
But a nice and dynamic shot!

I promise you, it's secure. (See my reply t o Keith above.) If it wasn't tied down per regulations, it would indeed be pulled over by police. That inspection is one reason they have to stop at weighing stations. Loggers know the rules. It's the amateur load-hauler that's the dangerous one - in other words, Dads hauling garage junk to the dump. They get stopped, but sometimes also get missed!

They are in girder frame loaders (used in UK and Europe) and then as Diane says cranked down ties. These are pros.. not someone moonlighting as a "garden clearance"

These are the loaders sanctioned by the Forestry Commission in the UK among many other tree felling enterprises.

They are ripping out young growth in "real forests" . Conservation went to Hell a long time ago. It started with the ripping out and laying bare of the old growth many years ago.

Tree farms as such also demolish the land and it is sucked dry of all that is good.

We actually need to re-educated.. these are not 'sustainable resources'

*gets off soapbox*

DO agree the pro transports actually do know how to tie down !

You can stay on your soap box, Pam - you are making a lot of sense as usual!

Possibly! And pencils. Every time I smell fresh pine or cedar wood I think, "mmm, pencils!" Thank you, Don.

You're kidding! You mean...you never make mistakes in your crossword puzzles? You don't mess up your linear equations with variables on both sides? ;-o

I'm not sure why, but pencils and I have never agreed. Once I erase something, I can't see what I put in its place. My puzzles are all in ink and I redefine 'hen scratch'....

Lol! Well, maybe you've got the wrong pencils. Ticonderoga is the way to go. ;-b I like the feel of pencils and the smell of pencils. There's something wrong.
