Interesting, you use the British "thingummy." Americans say "thingamajig." I have no idea why they are different.

Just seen! Been away for a few days.
I and most of my generation and younger use both but 'thingamajig' predominates.
My parents, who are both in their 80s, only use 'thingummy.'
So I presume the American English version is taking over.
