Omar Mateen had called 911 before his rampage to declare alleigance to ISIS. His father said his son had been "angry about seeing two men kiss" a few months ago. He had been interviewed by the FBI three times since 2013, yet he was able to legally buy an AR-15 and pistol. Read more: tinyurl.com/zrh77g7

Such a sad day. Will evil never leave us?

I guess not as long as it is encouraged by some prominent people.

Sadly that's all too true- there's a tendency to brutalization all around:-(

I am very depresssed about this. I was depressed in the first place about this election year and its horrible, nasty, violence-mongering rhetoric. Now...it's all incomprehensible. Oh, and there's also this: tinyurl.com/zpwbfyt

A very poignant image Diane. What an absolutely tragedy...........and my thoughts are with all those affected.

America's gun laws and the seemingly inability to reform them is incomprehensible to most of us here in the UK..!!

I know that, Keith. The tragedy is that this is incomprehensible to millions of Americans, too, but the gun fetishists rule Congress, thus the country. There is NO political will to change it, most especially among Republicans. Not even the massacre of 20 first-graders was enough. No amount of death is enough. People must have their guns and the rest of us are told to shut up and leave the country if we don't like it. It is our national shame.

My father owned two guns all his life. They were for hunting. Before he died, he was shocked and disgusted by the way gun ownership has become a frenzied religion.

I agree, Diane, it has become very depressing to watch the endorsement of more anger and violence by a significant part of our voting population. And, it's getting closer to home, for you Roseburg and Malheur, for LGBT's in So Cal, first San Bernardino and now the Orlando massacre. Much more is going to be needed beyond bonding in tragedy: Palm Springs vigil for Orlando (#182130)

The NY Times released an article this morning showing that we're roughly 900 times more like to die of gun violence than someone in Germany.

Our country is being horribly damaged, bit-by-bit. Terrorists won't do it, we'll do it to ourselves. Now, a despicable man is running for president and he and his followers call for mayhem. It seems it will never end.

Thank you for the link.

My sympathy to the victims, families and friends.

It is an abominable act.
Whatever the reason and the motivation behind it,
whether religious or political ... whatever.
The tolerance and the acceptance of dissenting
and otherwise acting fellows appears on this planet
to be still relatively underdeveloped.

Each person is a unique individual and must have the right,
to be different than the others.
Away from the gray mass unit and into a colorful diversity.
This is the true life that is worth living.

Maybe I'm just a naive dreamer, a simpleton.
At least, the hope remains that the message of more
Tolerance and acceptance arrives.
