Ha- well, this would have been in the 30s and 40s, so the unhealthy aspect might consist of things like bacon grease spread on bread and very little fresh fruit. A farm kid's menu. Thanks, Don.

Now that (bacon grease on bread) is something I don't remember, I don't think we went that far in the part of the South I know. Though, cold, left-over, hush-puppies aren't very different!

It's the kind of thing my dad ate during the depression. His family was the classic dirt poor, kids in raggedy clothes and so on. One winter there was nothing but potatoes and a little venison to eat. They lived on a homestead up in the mountains west of here, very isolated.
