Another masacre in America, another candlelight vigil
Yesterday, a hate-filled young man killed 9 students at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Nine were injured and are hospitalized. The shooter killed himself when confronted by police. Two students killed were family members of first-responders on the scene. Some victims were only 18 and 19 years old.
Already, gun advocates are announcing that if only everyone had a gun, this wouldn't have happened. There are denials galore that the widespread availability of guns has anything to do with this. The mental health system is blamed (as if this is the only country with mentally ill people), not guns.
President Obama is angry, I am angry, most of us are angry. It is impossible to assign blame for our gun violence to one problem - this lunacy is caused by many factors that are embedded in our culture. This continues year after year and has, in fact, escalated. The gun industry and its proponents take no responsibility whatsoever and our Congress allows this. It is the pinnacle of political failure.
