The wreck of DS Lodalen
This is the wreck of DS Lodalen. It's a steam vessel built in 1902 and used as a thug boat for rowing boats with tourists on Lake Lovatnet. It's a proof of two of the largest disasters in modern Norwegian history, the Loen disasters. It also illustrates some of the great dangers that comes with living in western Norway
The people living in the village of Bødalen and nearby vilages thought they were safe there. The avalanches that plagued the rest of the valley did not reach their houses. But in 1905 Mt. Ramnfjellet showed it's true nature. A large piece of rock (estimated size 100 x 50 x10 meters or 50000 cubic meter) came loose and crashed into the deep lake, creating a huge wave killing 61 people.
In 1936 the mountain did it again. This time about a million cubic meter fell from 800 meters creating a 70 meter tall wave, killing 74 people. Most farms in the disaster zone where abounded after that. The lake is no longer deep under the mountain and new rock falls have failed at creating any big waves.
When the first wave hit in 1905 DS Lodalen was towed on land for the winter. The wave tossed Ds Lodalen 300 meter inland. In the second disaster in 1936 the broken ship was tossed a few hundred meters more to it's present location.
