Ritual connections between food and the dead are ancient and cross many cultures. _________________________ ➽ On All Souls Day, on the 2nd of November, in the Bavarian-Swabia region it's a custom to bake "Seelen-Brezen" (Souls-Pretzels) from yeast dough. The time around the first of November was the beginning of the new year for our Celtic ancestors. In addition, the Celts believed that on this day the deceased would return to their earlier life for a day. This was no different in ancient Christian customs. Still a hundred years ago one could read in the books of the traditions that the people made preparations for this "return": In the evening, among other things, an additional place stetting was laid on the table and to satisfy the physical needs of the "poor souls" there were served "Seelen-Brezen". In some areas a loaf of bread was brought to the grave and a "Seelen-Breze" was placed on the grave cross. Even today there are still in many bakeries / confectioneries in Bavaria-Swabia "Seelen-Brezen" to buy. They are traditionally from yeast dough sprinkled with sugar or powdered sugar, or, more recently, lush marzipan-decorated chocolate pretzels ________________________ ➽ An Allerseelen, am 2. November, ist es in der Region Bayerisch-Schwaben Brauch, Seelen-Brezen aus Hefeteig zu backen Die Zeit um den ersten November herum war für unsere keltischen Vorfahren der Beginn des neuen Jahres. Außerdem glaubten die Kelten, dass an diesem Tag die Verstorbenen für einen Tag in ihr früheres Leben zurückkehren würden. Im alten christlichen Brauchtum war dies nicht anders. Noch vor hundert Jahren konnte man in Brauchtumsbüchern lesen, dass die Menschen für diese „Rückkehr“ Vorbereitungen trafen: Am Abend wurde, u.a. ein zusätzliches Gedeck aufgelegt und zur Befriedigung der leiblichen Bedürfnisse der "armen Seelen" servierte man ihnen „Seelenbrezen“ aus Hefeteig. In manchen Gegenden brachte man auch einen Laib Brot zum Grab und hängte eine „Seelenbreze“ an das Grabkreuz. Auch heute noch gibt es in vielen Bäckereien/Konditoreien in Bayerisch-Schwaben Seelen-Brezen zu kaufen. Sie sind traditionell aus Hefeteig, mit Zucker oder Puderzucker bestreut, oder, neuerdings, üppig mit Marzipan dekorierte Schokoladenbrezen.
