O’Flaherty’s Castle

11 Sep 2018 23 34 637
Seen on our Roundstone trip. Also better known as Bunowen Castle. A chance sight but well worth recording here. Seated on Dun Hill in the area of Bunowen, County Galway. Built in the 1500s and overlooking a private beach which in the old days was used as the main access here for the ‘Ferocious O’Flahertys’ were seafarers; the head of the clan, Donal, even married the legendary pirate queen Granuaile (Grace O’Malley). A retro look at this old 1899 engine.

Ennerdale Water

29 Oct 2014 37 57 498
This months Ipernity SPC competition was 'fences', would you believe, and so here is one of my Lake District shots of 2014 from the beautiful, lesser know 'lake' of Ennerdale Water. (it came 6th, and so you can see the quality of these competitions.) More info on the Ipernity SPC: www.ipernity.com/group/2249054/discuss/190840 Ennerdale Water is the most westerly lake in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is a glacial lake, with a maximum depth of 150 feet, and is ½ mile to a mile wide and 2½ miles long. -Wikipedia Pip - HFF and enjoy the weekend, Herb

Winters snap

23 Jan 2019 27 30 418
After browsing today, a 1925 photo book of old Germany, every large page in magnificent sepia, I was tempted to remind myself of how our modern digital scenes might look again using this effect. Here, after a brief cold snap, is a local reservoir, seen in quite a different light. Enjoy full size on black. ps look at the dates of this and my last photo here.

Storm brewing at Peyia

31 Jan 2019 36 41 453
This area of rocky coastline just north of Paphos in Cyrus is a delight to explore but it can be very dangerous to man and shipping alike. This storm came from nowhere and was gone just as quickly. Not the ideal conditions for swimming or a small boat. The monochrome here helps convey the feelings I saw here too. Enjoy full screen. New Mar24/2019 PiP

Aphrodite's rock

The famous rocks just east of Pafos in Cyprus.

Waterwheel fence

10 Apr 2019 33 68 659
An aged look for a very old waterwheel at Portland Basin museum here at Ashton-u-Lyne. A short arm of the Ashton Canal flowed directly into the building through three archways so that boats could load and unload undercover. This interesting waterwheel (1839) powered the hoists that transferred goods to and from the upper floors. I wish you all, a great Easter weekend, Herb A must, on full screen black. More Info

Dunottar Castle

05 May 2019 33 52 688
A rather dramatic view of this splendid castle upon almost an Island just south of Aberdeen, Scotland. It was possible to visit inside too but I had to resist that temptation. Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress located upon a rocky headland on the northeastern coast of Scotland, about 2 miles south of Stonehaven. The surviving buildings are largely of the 15th and 16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been fortified in the Early Middle Ages. More Info As always best viewed full screen.

Art Deco fence

20 Aug 2019 55 93 789
An unusual view of the stairway and fences of the newly refurbished Midland Hotel in Morecambe. This historic 1933 hotel stands on the seafront with the convex side facing the sea. It was refurbished and opened in 2008 and will shortly be joined here by a new Northern ‘Eden Project’. More Info . Needs full screen. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb

Anybody for a drink?

20 Aug 2019 24 30 251
The rather splendid Art Deco cocktail bar of Morecambe's Midland Hotel here. There are also splendid views of the sea too from these windows but with a centre of attraction like this, who needs views? See Pip

The Cobbled street of Rhodes

16 Sep 2019 27 27 275
The old town of Rhodes has many streets and arches like this. Much too many to show here. An almost monochromatic look of one of my favourites to add an 'Olde Worlde' flavour. Best full screen of course.

Happy New Decade from Holmfirth

30 Dec 2019 33 56 328
A new way at looking at old traditional subjects. No, this is not snow or frost but rather a different editing process of the bright sun shining on the grass, water and buildings. These are the same buildings of my last photo (pip) but this time looking down into the valley towards Digley reservoir, Holmfirth in Yorkshire. - -Deserves full screen! I wish all my viewers here a Happy New Year and of course a Happy New Decade too. Herb

Portland Basin

15 Jan 2020 25 22 248
A retrospective look at the Portland Canal basin in Ashton-u-Lyne. This is the junction of three canals: Ashton Canal to the left, Huddersfield Narrow canal to the right and I am on the Peak Forest Canal. The building you can see was originally the 19c Ashton Canal warehouse here, now a free museum and cafe. The 1835 bridge is an old cobbled pathway, that allowed horses to continue along the canal. The Pip is an old waterwheel of the same warehouse -just to the right of this scene. NB Nice full size. A canal basin is (particularly in the United Kingdom) an expanse of waterway alongside or at the end of a canal, and wider than the canal, constructed to allow boats to moor or unload cargo without impeding the progress of other traffic, and to allow room for turning, thus serving as a winding hole. Ingleborough, prince of English mountains

13 Mar 2020 31 18 266
A monochromatic view of this lovely peak after recent snows showing its South West face. Ingleborough at 723 m (2,372ft) is the second-highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales, England. It is one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, and is frequently climbed as part of the Three Peaks walk. Enjoy full screen

Visions of Park Bridge: A fenced heritage

29 May 2020 49 80 431
HFF wishes from the Park Bridge Country Park. We are just approaching the steep rocky valley, outlined in the series of photos before this. These fences stop people and animals venturing into the two small area’s which are in fact depressions in the ground with now covered deep holes, possibly caused by mining tunnel collapses as this was coal mining country. This at one time would have been a busy place but now it’s generally quite lonely. The trees are a new addition. HFF, enjoy your weekend

The Wonders of Mallorca: Serra de Tramuntana

23 Sep 2014 31 15 289
This mountain range described as the northern backbone of Mallorca runs from the southwest to the northeast. We see here, of course the Mediterranean sea looking north to the Spanish mainland and Barcelona some 180km away and behind to the right is Puig Major the highest mountain of this area. Our road continues ahead along this coast now toward the famous Cap de Formentor lighthouse and then on to Pollença. Enjoy this monochrome rendition in full screen.

A Loweswater fence.

17 Aug 2020 41 56 352
One of the Western 'Lake Districts' lesser known lakes here. This side of the lake has a trail running almost the entire length and with one or two fences like this jutting into the water, an ideal opportunity for me to get more photos for our HFF group. A slight difference in artistic style here with this sepia monochrome version. Hope you enjoy it. HFF. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

The old boat winch

28 Sep 2020 25 21 338
Seen overlooking the beach at Runswick Bay. Some years back there used to be a lot more fishing boats around here, now there are mainly memories and a few pleasure boats but this old winch survives to pull the odd boat up out of the water as seen. Enjoy full screen.
