The Skye Bridge from above

The Skye Bridge from above
A look down onto this bridge from the Cnoc Trail on the Isle of Skye itself.

The Isle of Skye is connected to the mainland by a road bridge. Connecting the mainland village of Kyle of Lochalsh to the village of Kyleakin on Skye.
The bridge construction started in 1992 built by the Scottish company Miller, but designed by a German engineering company DYWIDAG Systems International in collaboration with civil engineering firm Arup.

The main bridge is a concrete arch, supported by two piers. This connect Skye to the small island called Eilean Bàn, the rest of the bridge is level across to the mainland. The total distance across is 1.5 miles (2.4km). The main arch is about 35m high (30m clearance for boats on high tide).

Apologies for slight camera shake at handheld 300 (450mm) and slow shutter speed. (You would think I would know better by now ! (˚◡˚) )

Enjoy full screen

Yes a great P.O.V from this vantage point on the trail. I took a lot of photos of this bridge but I did like this one in particular. Shake: in reality, I noticed later that I had accidently knocked off the lens VR control. Not that I took this in a hurry! Stupid -beginners trick -or old man's! I will post another of this bridge in a couple of days and then decide if I might use one of them in the CWP.

Cheers. Herb

This image looks fine to me Herb. Not an angle I have seen in any photograph so a bit of a revelation.

Thanks Colin and I agree, I have seen very few from this angle too. I would have liked a really nice one showing both the bridge and the viaduct together and I have some but in quite poor lighting. Cheers for the visit.

Yes, it is quite beautiful from a lot of different angles too. I took quite a few, staying not too far away from it but mostly in poor weather. I will post more anon. Glad you liked the hump.

Cheers, Herb

ps I walked along it to the crest of the hump from the Skye side but again, a job to get the picture I really wanted.

Yes, this is not what the drivers across this bridge sees at all. I have a couple more from different places that I shall post in due course. Very happy that you have enjoyed it.

Thanks Gabi. The bridge is not strange at all but my P.o.V is a little unusual. I shall put another on here soon and then you will see it as it really is.

From this PoV it looks really steep! That bridge was a great improvement over the ferry though not welcomed by all....

Yes it made a big difference to the travel times here but for many years it caused great upset and arguments because of the very high toll price. Now it is free! It was said to be the most expensive toll bridge in Europe (but I don't know how true that was!) The fast free crossing has also brought more tourist onto the Island - a mixed blessing! If I lived there, I would not be wanting it but as a tourist it was great!

Glad you liked it.

I love the curve of this bridge, Herb. It reminds me of a shortened form of some fjord bridges in Norway. Not as romantic as the ferry, but much more practical. I'm surprised that there is such little traffic.
