The Green Knight at Pickering

The Green Knight at Pickering
Taken inside Pickering station, now used as the terminus of the, 'North York Moors' historical trust line.
The residual steam and smoke here combining to give a nostalgic feeling of the age of steam.
See PiP
" Essentially a tender version of the Standard 4 Tank like 80135 and 80136, the 4-6-0 version of the British Railways Standard 4 design was intended for general passenger and freight use on lines where the usual "Black Five" and similar locomotives would be too large or heavy. 80 examples were built between 1951 and 1957 and were allocated to the London Midland, Western and Southern regions.

75029 was built in 1954 and was decidedly mobile during her service life, being allocated to depots across the Western region including Reading, Oxford and Swindon, with a stint in Wales at Machynlleth and Croes Newydd sheds in the early to mid sixties.

Painted in British Railways' Brunswick Green livery used on passenger engines, "The Green Knight" has been a stalwart of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, including being passed to work to Whitby and Battersby on the national network. A crack in the firebox was identified in 2015 and she is currently awaiting attention. " NYMR

Aye Nick, I bet it would. I did once have one of my photos turned into an electronic jigsaw but a real cardboard one would be better for this. Very happy that you like it.

Always a delight to please you with these Jaap. I always think that a little bit of technical info regarding these very interesting man-made machines is good. I know that some people looking at this will appreciate, as you and I do, the extra story. Best Wishes, Herb

The diffused light and the steam combine to make this a very atmpspheric image Herb. Nicely composed too, and that's a beautiful old loco.

The detail you've captured in the PiP is superb.

Thanks a lot Keith. I got quite excited when i witnessed all this. It reminded me so much of an old mono photo I had once seen of a big steam engine in an old steam shed full of smoke and atmosphere. Very happy that you appreciate the fine detail of the wheel detail PiP too.

Hi Herb,

Very nicely taken in a difficult situation. The clock says 'six o clock', the headcode is for just a brakevan, (which I can just see the end of) so my guess is that this is the end of the day, and it is just about to go back to the shed. 'Tender first' is always difficult, but here you have included a great chunk of roof and smoke to give it some context, so making a really pleasing picture.

Best Wishes
Peter

Hi Peter, nice to see you again. I can see from your comment that you know so much more about these things than I do. Looking at my original exif it says the time is 16.06 and so you are probably dead right with your end of day assumptions. (time corrected on here too now) I took a lot of shots as I wanted to recreate the feeling of what it was like in the old days in these big stations and engine sheds by including the high Victorian roof. Glad you like it, Herb
